Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and diverse safari destinations. Located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park is known for its lush forests, open plains, soda lake, and rich wildlife. Although smaller than many other parks, Lake Manyara offers a unique and rewarding safari experience with beautiful landscapes and close wildlife encounters.

Overview of Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park stretches between the steep Rift Valley wall and the shallow alkaline waters of Lake Manyara. This varied environment creates different habitats within a small area, including groundwater forests, grasslands, acacia woodlands, and wetlands.

The park is easily accessible from Arusha and is often included as part of the Northern Safari Circuit together with Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park.

Wildlife in Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara is famous for its variety of wildlife and is especially known for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior seen in only a few places in Africa. During a safari, visitors may see:

  • Elephants moving through the forest and open areas

  • Tree-climbing lions resting in acacia trees

  • Giraffes, zebras, and buffalo

  • Hippos near the lake and pools

  • Baboons and monkeys in large numbers

The park’s compact size makes wildlife viewing easy and enjoyable.

Birdlife and Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara National Park is a paradise for bird lovers, with more than 400 bird species recorded. The lake attracts flamingos, pelicans, storks, and many water birds, while the forest and woodlands are home to colorful kingfishers, hornbills, and birds of prey.

Seasonal changes affect bird activity, but birdwatching is excellent throughout the year.

Scenic Beauty and Landscape

One of Lake Manyara’s greatest attractions is its scenery. Visitors enjoy dramatic views of the Rift Valley escarpment, dense green forests, open savannahs, and the wide lake surface reflecting the sky. These landscapes make the park ideal for photography and relaxed game drives.

Best Time to Visit Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park can be visited all year round. The dry season from June to October is ideal for wildlife viewing, while the green season from November to May offers lush scenery and excellent birdlife, especially for flamingo sightings.
