Mount Kilimanjaro – Lemosho Route (8 Days / 7 Nights)
OVERVIEW
The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west and is renowned for its beautiful landscapes, low traffic, and excellent acclimatization profile. It merges with the Machame route on Day 4 and follows the southern circuit to the summit. This route is ideal for hikers looking for a slower-paced, quieter ascent.
DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,250m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m)
After registration at Londorossi Gate, drive to the Lemosho trailhead. Begin trekking through dense rainforest rich in wildlife, including black-and-white colobus monkeys and exotic birds. Reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (“Big Tree Camp”) by late afternoon.
Trek time: 3–4 hours
Vegetation: Rainforest
Main highlight: Remote, lush forest and wildlife sightings
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 1 Camp (3,505m)
Ascend through the forest and into the moorland zone, with views of Shira Ridge and the surrounding plateau. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, set in an open high-altitude landscape.
Trek time: 5–6 hours
Vegetation: Moorland
Main highlight: Emerging from the forest with expansive views of Shira Plateau
Day 3: Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
Trek across the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. Enjoy sweeping views and unique geological features. Optional acclimatization hike in the afternoon.
Trek time: 3–4 hours

Main highlight: Open wilderness, dramatic ridges, and acclimatization walk
Day 4: Shira 2 – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Climb up to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp, passing through the alpine desert zone into a lush valley. This is a key day for “climb high, sleep low.”
Trek time: 6–8 hours
Vegetation: Alpine desert to moorland
Main highlight: Lava Tower and beautiful Barranco Valley views
Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Climb the dramatic Barranco Wall, then traverse through glacial valleys. Reach Karanga Camp, which is essential for acclimatization before summit push.
Trek time: 4–5 hours
Vegetation: Alpine desert
Main highlight: Barranco Wall climb and sweeping glacier valley landscapes
Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Short hike up to Barafu Camp, the base camp for summit night. Eat an early dinner, rest, and prepare for the midnight ascent.
Trek time: 3–4 hours
Vegetation: Alpine desert
Main highlight: Mawenzi views and anticipation of the summit climb
Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Start the summit attempt around midnight. Climb slowly to Stella Point on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and photos, descend to Barafu for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.
Trek time: 12–15 hours
Main highlight: Sunrise at Uhuru Peak and standing on the Roof of Africa
Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m)
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel for a well-earned rest.
