Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Machame Route (7 Days / 6 Nights)
OVERVIEW
The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and beautiful routes to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). It features stunning views, varied ecosystems (rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit), and a well-paced ascent to improve acclimatization. This route is best suited for physically fit individuals.
DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)
After breakfast and a briefing in Moshi or Arusha, drive to Machame Gate for registration. Begin your trek through the lush rainforest. You’ll hike for about 5–7 hours, spotting unique flora, monkeys, and birds. The trail gradually climbs to Machame Camp.

Vegetation: Rainforest
Main highlight: Lush forest, waterfalls, and birdlife
Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840m)
Continue ascending through moorland with beautiful views of Kibo and Shira Plateau. The terrain opens up with fewer trees and more heather. Reach Shira Camp, located on a plateau with panoramic mountain vistas.
Trek time: 4–6 hours
Vegetation: Moorland
Main highlight: First full view of Kibo Peak and stunning sunsets
Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,950m)
Today is an important acclimatization day. You’ll climb to Lava Tower at 4,630m, have lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp. The “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Trek time: 6–8 hours
Vegetation: Alpine desert
Main highlight: Acclimatization, dramatic Lava Tower, and the scenic Barranco Valley
Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Climb the iconic Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable scramble offering amazing views. The trail undulates through glacial valleys until reaching Karanga Camp, a good stop for acclimatization.
Trek time: 4–5 hours
Vegetation: Alpine desert
Main highlight: Climbing the Barranco Wall (“Breakfast Wall”) and incredible landscapes
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Today is a shorter hike, but with increasing altitude. Arrive at Barafu Camp, the base for summit attempts. Rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for a midnight summit push.
Trek time: 3–4 hours
Vegetation: Alpine desert
Main highlight: Views of Mawenzi Peak and the anticipation of summit night
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Wake up around midnight for your summit attempt. Trek in the dark over scree slopes to Stella Point (5,739m) and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, descend to Barafu, rest briefly, and then continue to Mweka Camp.
Trek time: 12–15 hours
Main highlight: Reaching Uhuru Peak – the Roof of Africa!
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m)
A gradual downhill hike through the rainforest takes you to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and well-earned rest.
Trek time: 3–4 hours
Main highlight: Completion of your Kilimanjaro journey!
